Corporate social responsibility (CSR)

As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility programs, MICTSL Management has always promoted social welfare activities for its employees and the Malagasy community in general.

Through its actions, the company aims to share its convictions as an example of corporate citizenship: its support to and cooperation with various state entities, its long term commitment for a better education of Malagasy children, its involvement in improving basic health care at the national level are so many elements realizing this will.

The main components of our actions are summarized as follows :

  • Employees training ;
  • Improved well -being of employees ;
  • Education of employees’ children ;
  • Education and Community Health;
  • Support to local public services;

Employees training

In its Human Resources management policies, MICTSL pays particular attention to internal promotion and therefore strive to upgrade staff’s skills at all level.

Each year, approximately 65% of employees receive training in various fields; among others: maintenance of latest generation equipment, operating systems used in the terminal, English communication, operating heavy equipment or the latest innovations in IT.

Infrastructures with necessary equipment have been put in place to conduct trainings on site but some courses require travelling to the capital or outside the country.

These trainings have brought improvements, both to the concerned employees as well as to the services offered to customers.

In fact, the quest for continuous improvement is one of the foundations of company’s policy.

Benefits and Social programs

The well-being of employees and their families is a daily concern of MICTSL. Thus, various programs to improve living conditions and employees' working conditions were developed and implemented to contribute:

  • Various forms of loans to be used to finance the construction, expansion or renovation of residential houses; the acquisition of transport equipment and finally the purchase of computer equipment for domestic use;
  • Setting up a canteen serving nearly 100,000 annual meals inside the terminal with opening times covering all specific terminal work schedules;
  • Taking care of collective transportation to/from the terminal for those not having private vehicles;

Education of employees’ children

Each year MICTSL contributes to children 's school fees of all employees ; whether permanent or temporary.

School supplies including school bags, pencil cases , notebooks, pens, rulers , etc. are distributed.

Each school year, three scholarships are granted by the company to the best of fresh high school graduates; covering tuitions, supplies, books as well as other regular expenses.

The chosen university courses by the students are varied: medical sciences, law, industrial maintenance, management, etc.

Education and community health

True to his vision and firmly convinced of the importance of education for the development of Madagascar and future generation’s self-fulfillment, MICTSL actively participates in the improvement of school infrastructures by building classrooms and providing grants to public school students.

Other partnerships with various associations, Non-Governmental Organizations and few service clubs also allow MICTSL to support the needy:

- Financing of a nutritional center helping families in daily feeding young children and ensure their medical care;

- Donation of materials and assistance to orphanages;

- Financial participation and logistical support to the actions of the hospital ship “Africa Mercy”;

Support to local public services

Conscious of the need for infrastructure and facilities in the city where it is located, MICTSL regularly finances projects directly impacting the population of Toamasina.

Among others, the renovation of the town hall, Toamasina people’s pride, or the purchase of an ambulance for the urban municipality of Toamasina I.

There are many activities in association with the urban municipality of Toamasina and the Atsinanana region and MICTSL is among the local operators taking part in the efforts to maintain the cleanliness of the city.

Although based in Toamasina, MICTSL contributes, through various partnerships, in social actions aiming to improve the lives of all Malagasy.

Thus, thanks to a partnership with the Ministry of Health, vaccines have been distributed throughout the country free of charge; another one with the Ministry of Education, permitted to install solar panels in pilot sites to electrify rural schools in different regions of Madagascar.

MICTSL supports its employees who organized themselves in various sports such as football, basketball and petanque.

Matches are often organized in Toamasina and in small towns around. However, matches have already been held in Antananarivo; namely during the fundraising futsal tournament for the national beach soccer team and MICTSL was among the sponsors.

International solidarity

Following the tragedy in the Philippines during the passage of Typhoon Haiyan on November 8, 2013, MICTSL made good advantage of the technical expertise of three of its employees, Malagasy specialists of mobile harbor cranes, in favor of the disaster victims.  They joined the Port of Tacloban in the Philippines for an initial assistance mission of three months but has been extended at the request of beneficiaries.

Thus, unlike other Non-Governmental Organizations distributing food, money or other items, MICTSL reinforced logistical support of international aid through the skills of its employees.
